 LISEF Overview

The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair has become an extremely successful and professional event. More than 50 schools participated in the 2005 event involving approximately 450 students. Sixteen individual Finalists and eight Finalist teams were selected to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. The Intel ISEF brings together over 1,200 students from 40 nations to compete for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a $50,000 college scholarship and a high-performance computer. At Intel ISEF, LISEF students mingled with Nobel Laureates, met students from over 40 countries and had the opportunity to present their work to over 1000 judges.

Several major initiatives that LISEF enacted in recent years are:
• Changed the name of the science fair for students in grades 9 – 12 to the Charles Duggan Long Island Science and Engineering Fair
• Created a Proposal Fair for students in grades 9 – 11 who are just beginning their research.
• Awarded ‘Best in Category’ prizes to every category with more than five student entrants.

LISEF is now looking to the future. In order to involve more teachers, students and scientists, LISEF, Inc. is in the process of reorganizing to work under the name REAL - Research Educators Alliance of Long Island. REAL’s misson will be “To promote and support excellence in scientific inquiry in K – 12 education on Long Island.” REAL plans to do this via the following activities: Outreach, Junior Academy of Science, Fairs (LISEF, Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, Proposal Fair), Abstract Journal, Professional Development, Student Sponsorship and more. By doing this, LISEF will be fulfilling the full vision of Charles Duggan as set out in the original Long Island Science and Engineering Fair by-laws.
